Playing a horror game in a well-lit room isn’t exactly right for the mood of the game, as you might well imagine. This means that if you want to play Spirit Camera you must do so in a lighted room, otherwise your camera will not recognize the AR markers you need to detect in order to continue. It was designed for rudimentary amateur photography at best, with very low resolution (that’s under VGA), but, even worse, a complete inability to detect objects in low light conditions. The problem? The 3DS’s camera just isn’t up to the task. This is a horror game that requires the use of the 3DS’s built-in camera for plot progression and as its main game mechanism. Except there is a kicker.Īnyone who owns a 3DS has probably already realized the fundamental problem with the game setup. The narrative is spooky and very well presented, and it creates an atmosphere of extreme fear and real tension within the game, which due to the nature of the game literally spills out into reality causing the player to feel like they are feel more connected to the game than he otherwise would have.

Players go on a journey to free Maya from the torments that haunt her. Telling the story of Maya, a girl who stumbled upon a cursed ancient book that haunts anyone who opens it and reads the writing, Spirit Camera involves players using the real face diary- the game’s cursed book, which is actually a collection of AR markers and comes with the game. The concept is really scary, and there is a lot of room for a future game to play. Besides making good use of the camera and AR technology, it also makes use of the system’s built-in gyroscope the player is supposed to be running the system to try and detect the game’s ghosts and demons in the real world through the game screen. Spirit Camera is a game that feels perfectly comfortable on the 3DS. Where Spirit Camera falters is therefore in its execution.

The concept is surely great, and the fact that this game, along with a few others like the PSP title Invizimals, is a pioneer of AR gaming is something to praise.
Zwcad classic 2015 series#
Spirit Camera itself is a title that follows the conventions of the series, but decides to take advantage of the photographic element by using the cameras of the 3DS to play in augmented reality in real time, which makes for a refreshing experience, both for the series and for games in general.

The following games upped the ante, although the series decided to become exclusive to Nintendo, it lost its already limited popularity, due to Nintendo’s outright refusal to bring the games to the west. The first Fatal Frame was sort of a groundbreaking title and was widely hailed as a breath of fresh air in the somewhat stale survival horror genre. For the uninitiated – and you will surely be many out there – the Fatal Frame games are a series of horror titles, which focuses on ancient rituals, exorcism and still features photography as the focal point of the game. together, this is not a title that can be recommended for a good conscience purchase.īut let’s go back and start from the beginning. The Nintendo released (and now renamed) Spirit Camera deserves credit for many things – including successfully making it out of Japan, and for being the first full-fledged large AR-based handheld game in recent memory – but in the making. And yet, here we are, just a few months after the title’s original release in Japan, with the Western copies in our hands. Nintendo’s somewhat dubious record in locating niche games lately. A gadget, low-key and wearable spin-off of the somewhat troubled Fatal Frame series, which is a franchise that benefits a limited audience at best, there was little to no chance Spirit Camera would succeed here, given the trail.
